MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT CHECKLIST

  • STOP IMMEDIATELY. Be careful of vehicular traffic. If possible, do not change the position or location of the motor vehicles unless they present a danger to yourself and fellow motorists. The manner in which the motor vehicles are positioned immediately following the impact of the accident may provide important information for the Police

  • REMAIN CALM. Anxiety levels are usually high after an accident. However, it is necessary to keep your composure so you can make rational decisions and obtain the necessary and relevant information to protect your future interests.

  • CALL POLICE. It is imperative that a report be made documenting all the facts and circumstances surrounding the accident. Subsequently thereafter, obtain a copy of the Police Report.

  • EXCHANGE INFORMATION. Obtain the name, address, license number and telephone number of the owner and operator of the other motor vehicle(s), as well as the vehicle registration and insurance information of the other motor vehicle(s).

  • WITNESSES/PASSENGERS. Obtain the names, addresses, phone numbers, and statements of any witnesses to the accident, as well as any passengers in all the motor vehicles.

  • DISCUSSIONS. Do not speak about the accident to anyone other than the Police. Take notes of any statements of fault and what was observed by the witnesses and passengers.

  • PHOTOGRAPHS. It is important to preserve evidence immediately after the accident. Take photographs of the motor vehicle(s) involved in the accident, the location of the accident and any injuries sustained by any individual. The points of impact to the motor vehicle(s), the nature of the damage of the motor vehicle(s) and the location of the accident are critical in assessing liability for the accident and the extent of an individual's injuries.

  • INJURIES. Call an ambulance and go to the Hospital. Even if it appears you are not injured, you should have medical personnel conduct a complete and thorough examination. If you are injured, see appropriate medical specialists for follow up care and treatment.

  • INSURANCE COMPANY. Immediately notify your insurance company of the accident. Your insurance company will then be able to promptly investigate the accident. Furthermore, your insurance company will be able to promptly begin providing you benefits under your policy, such as a rental motor vehicle, loss wage reimbursement, transportation expenses reimbursement and payment of your medical expenses.
